It depends of the book. Usually I scar my books when they are that good that I feel compelled to dog ear a page or journal in the book about a passage (or nugget as I like to call them) that moves me. Some of my favorite books are the ones that look well read because I know they are well loved.

I'm a book abuser people! Try to remember not to loan me one of your books. I dog-ear mainly but when I'm taking a lit class, I also write in the books. Seriously, though I'm always nicer to the book I get from the library and those loaned to me.

A total no-no for me! Dog-eared pages are horrifying! I do admit to writing in cookbooks, but that's the exception.

Hate lending out books in case they come back dog-eared with bent covers and broken spines, so only lend books I don't care if I get back or not.

This is such a great question!
I'm definitely a no-scar person on anything fiction. I think a librarian drilled into my head that dog-earing was a no-no when I was little. In fact, I think we were fined for dog-eared books. So I'm always mildly horrified when I see people do it. :D
But when it comes to non-fiction, anything goes!! I guess that librarian never lent me non-fiction!
I love making little notes in the margins and underlining bits I like. It's funny to read back on the notes too. It's almost like reading old journal entries, because I'm instantly brought back to where I was at in my life and why I wrote them.
And as for cookbooks? You can flip through mine and see which recipes are popular in this house. Those pages are pretty much splattered and abused.

My lit class teacher is always telling us to underline passages and such in books... and it's absolutely killing me! I like a book with character (ie my copy of Game of Thrones was printed with jagged 'extra' corners which stick up oddly above the other pages), but can't stand it when a friend gives a book back to me and it has water damage or the cover is bent.

I LOVE finding scarred books at used book stores and flea markets. Especially fun is when they have little doodles and notes in the margins. The only time I''m really careful is when I have signed copies, or special hardbacks. Fun question!
