Reading level: Young Adult
Hardcover: 464 pages
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry (June 7, 2011)

Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That's fine by her, as long as her beloved twin brother Lugh is around. But when a monster sandstorm arrives, along with four cloaked horsemen, Saba's world is shattered. Lugh is captured, and Saba embarks on an epic quest to get him back.

Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the world outside of desolate Silverlake, Saba is lost without Lugh to guide her. So perhaps the most surprising thing of all is what Saba learns about herself: she's a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. And she has the power to take down a corrupt society from the inside. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization.

My Review

I never read the synopsis before diving in. I took a big leap or so I thought by reading this. The cover and the title did not give me any indication that I would enjoy Red Blood Road. After all Red Blood doesn't excite me. I even thought it might have been about vampires.  I love a well written dystopian as long as it doesn't start to become a formula read. So diving in I was even more thrown off by the way it was written. I think it took me about 30 pages to grasp why they spoke with a backwards uneducated words. It made complete sense. By page 50 I was so deep into the plot my husband had to scream to get my attention. LOL

Moira has woven a powerful heroic tale with an epic journey. Saba the main character is a force to be reckon with. After her bother has been taken and her father has been murdered. It falls on Saba's shoulders to keep her sister Emmi, safe and save her brother Lugh.  Saba has so much to learn. Not just about who and what the world is about, she needs to learn about herself. She also needs a lesson or two in kindness towards her sister.
I have read very few books that I have wished to become a movie, but for the life of me this would be amazing on the big screen. I could see the Angel of Death fighting for her life and the free hawks coming to the rescue. They were some kick-butt chicks.  I do wonder if she (the head free hawk) was partial to women in her sexual preference. I just wonder if anyone else seemed to pick up on that?? Not that it matters I just wonder if she was attracted to Saba.

So much happened in 500 or so pages and I still feel I need more.  Even with the kick-butt girls, crazy kings, boats on land, slavery, kidnapping and a know it all good looking guy. No worries this is just the first in the series.

For the record this has to be the best YA Dystopian that has recently come out. Hands down it was awesome.  SO despite my first hesitation I feel like I came out a grand prize winner after reading Blood Red Road.

I'd of course, love to enter! I've been extremely curious about this particular dystopian read & the fact that you enjoyed it and were addicted to it speaks volumes :)
