Sue Wyshyski

A lot of people wonder how to say my last name--Wyshynski--but it's super easy. Just think "wish-in-ski".

I'm addicted to books of all kinds, particularly funny ones. In addition to writing, I work in film and television. While writing POSER, I worked as a body double/stand-in on Beyond the Break, the hit TV drama about teen surfers. I just spent three really fun months working with Shailene Woodley, star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, on George Clooney’s latest movie, The Descendants.

When I'm not writing or working, I love to surf or ride my bmx bike. I once spent two full years traveling around the world on a surf expedition, which was awesome. I highly recommend adventures in any format :D

That's me, Alex Sanchez, with my mom. I was born in Mexico City to parents of Cuban and German heritage. My family moved to the United States when I was five.

Mom claimed she never suspected I was gay. Yeah, right, Mom. Even though Mom couldn't see it, I sensed I was different from other boys--though I couldn't identify exactly how.
In junior high words like "faggot" and "homo" began to take meaning, and my world crashed in. High school totally hurt. I hated how I looked and who I was.

If you're in school now and having a hard time, know that you can get through it. I did, though there were times I didn't think I'd be able to. The pressures on gay teens can be overwhelming--to keep secrets, tell lies, deny who you are, and try to be who you're not. Remember: you are special and worth being cared about, loved, and accepted just as you are. Never, ever let anyone convince you otherwise. If you need to be reminded of that, check out the Youth Resources for someone to connect with. In college I wrote my first children's book. Later I received a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling. I went on to work with youth and families in the U.S. and overseas. The story of Rainbow Boys came to me at a time when I was struggling with my own coming out issues. It was my first novel.

Becca Fitzpatrick's first book, Hush, Hush, debuted as a New York Times bestseller. She graduated college with a degree in health, which she promptly abandoned for storytelling. When not writing, she's most likely running, prowling sale racks for shoes, or fulfilling her mission to taste every flavor of ice cream under the sun. She lives in Colorado, the lone girl in a house filled with boys.

Where I'm from . . .

THE NETHERLANDS . . . where I was born.

ISRAEL . . . my first memories . . . of sand, friendship, and men emptying our house of everything we owned while my mother stood by calmly and they drove away in a truck. (Movers, only I didn't know what that meant at the time.)

SOUTH AFRICA . . . where I slept in the bush, and got my inspiration for IBHUBESI: THE LION. More firsts . . . school, where I carried my bookbag on my head and sang African songs . . . first sense of place, believing I was African, despite my sister's insistence that we were Americans . . . first taste of politics, the terrible policy of apartheid . . . first realization that grownups are not perfect and sometimes quite nasty.

SCOTLAND . . . my school was like Hogwarts, without magic, but complete with . . .
1. Houses (mine was "Douglas," gold badge)
2. Colorful teacher nicknames (The L, Giant, Furry Forrie)
3. Detentions (I still remember writing lines: "I must ask permission when this is necessary.")
4. Prefects (to be avoided--can lead to #3, above)
5. Plimsoles (sneakers), rubbers (erasers), prep (homework), berets (the hat kind), vests (the undershirt kind), knickers (the underpants kind), "elevenses" (snack), pudding (dessert), eating at high table (think: sitting between Dumbledore and McGonagall in the Hogwarts dining hall), and the best, a "siggie" or "signature" (a coveted slip of paper bearing the Headmistress's signature, recognizing you for a brave act or noble deed, and earning you extra points for your House as well as the admiration of your peers).

NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA . . . icebergs in the harbor, Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights), the silver thaw, Bayman versus Townie, Miss Conception, cod jigging, caplin running, fish and bruise, curling, screech, mummers, and if none of this makes sense, look for explanations in an upcoming novel . . . .

VIRGINIA . . . home, though I still love traveling and, as always, learning, reading, writing, playing games, eating chocolate, drinking coffee, and laughing with family and friends.

Sue's site - I love the summer feeling it gives. I love summer and going to the beach. Surfing looks really fun. It's one of my dreams to be able to learn how to surf. Sue's cool! Anyway, I liked the Fun Stuff page too.

Alex's site - It's simple, but i liked how you see his books on the homepage. I also liked that he's pretty open on showing his support for Gay Teens and giving different advices.

Cyn's site - I liked her blog and her bio! LOL at "Useless Facts" part of her bio. Cinderella is like my all-time favorite Fairy Tale. I don't think i could name name all 50 states in 20 seconds or less. Yikes!

Becca's site - I liked that one pic in her bio page. Loved that frown on her face! So cute! I enjoyed reading her recent blog post. OMG! The jacket cover of Silence is so beautiful! I can't wait for the release! October please come fast!

Katherine's site - I loved her Bio page. Loved all the pictures in there. That one pic of her which she was holding a bucket reminded me of my classmate back in High School. She looked like her! I loved her! Loved the Playlists page too. A lot of great songs listed!
