They also feature ink.
The first book, in the hardcover edition, was printed in green ink (even the illustrations!). The Tasters Guild follows in blue. But this time the story itself revolves around ink, from a deadly and powerful plant—long thought extinct. A plant called scourge bracken.
Scourge bracken has fallen into the wrong hands—first, into the capable yet duplicitous ones of a forger named Dumbcane. But soon the weed tires of the man, and searches out someone with more power. And since this is Caux, there are no shortage of wicked people. Scourge bracken has another name, one that a few dare only whisper: Kingmaker. For one thing is true: scourge bracken will stop at nothing to rule.
As the wise man Axlerod D. Roux says, “It will leave the fields burnt and smoldering, the forests blighted and crumbling, the rivers poisoned and black, and then—as you stand amid the rubble—only then, will you be king.”
Now, that’s some ink!
Here’s a recipe for another one from Axle’s famed Field Guide to the Poisons of Caux—followed by a warning no one should ignore.
A good and durable ink may be made by the following directions: 3 drams of clear rain water, a vessel of powdered galls and a sizable bath of eau de vie. Add gum Arabic and rasped logwood. Warm with summer’s sun or winter’s fire for 2 days. Strain.
Under no circumstances should you distill an ink or dye from an unknown weed or untested recipe, for this might very well result in unforeseen and highly unpleasant consequences.
Thank You Susannah for dropping by and giving us a little knowledge. I personally think it's kicking the books are printed in color. That doesn't happen often.
