…is that they almost always create a new generation of writers. Ask any writer and they will tell you they were inspired to write by something they read as a child.
I’m always asked what I read as a child so here, in no particular order is my top ten. Trying to compile the list proved to be practically impossible and when I did winnow the list down to ten, I was surprised to find that they were books I read when I was around 12-14. It just goes to show the power that great YA literature has on its readers. I know I’ve cheated by including series, but a series is nothing more than one big book! (The six Flamel books are really just one huge novel!)
The Borrowers Series by Mary Norton. Without a doubt, the series which first encouraged me to write. The little people who live under your house and in the walls and “borrow” everything which goes missing.
The Owl Service, by Alan Garner. Beautiful, mysterious and haunting. I still remember the impact it had on me: here was where I discovered that words could be terrifying.
The Dark is Rising Series by Susan Cooper. Forget the modern movie. Start this incredible series with Over Sea, Under Stone.
Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. If I have a preference it is for Finn. Last year, when I toured for The Sorceress, it was the book which travelled across America with me.
The Witch World Series by Andre Norton. She is one of the great storytellers of the 20th Century – and shamefully out of print. She wrote over 200 novels, but my favourites are those belonging to the Witch World cycle.
A Christmas Carol. It’s a ghost story, a tale of redemption, it has time travel, pathos, humor … and most readers when they come to the book are usually astonished by how slender it is. I read it once a year. Guess when?
The Greek Myths by Robert Graves. I was probably in my early teens when I first read Graves version of the Greek Myths. It started a life long love of mythology which ultimately created the Flamel series.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE THIS SERIES! I am LIVING to read this! The classics that Michael Scott read sound interesting, I read The Chronicles of Narnia and I sort of wants to read The Greek Myths by Robert Graves.
Thanks so much for this amazingly awesome opportunity! :)
He's amazing! Like Michael Scott, I loved The Borrowers so much as a kid, my parents even took buttons from my "Borrowers dish" I set out each day. They had me believing! I put a link on my blog but I linked it to your page today. I'm not sure if I should have put the link directly to the form but then the person would miss out on your great blog!
I *very* recently finished The Alchemyst and really enjoyed it. The storyline is somewhat unique in my opinion and am tremendously curious to see what's going to happen next. Luckily for me I've the next two in my vault and I'd be really happy to get my hands on this one as well! Thanks for the giveaway :D

Kids books. Well I am 74 and love this series. Came to it late as I grew up in a home where any reading material not connected to te bible or christianiy was forbidden. Took awhile to catch up in college but having found this series I have no intention of giving it up because someone defines it as 'for children'. Fingers crossed here in the Poconos. Wonder where the fingers crossed myth came from. Know it was around before the dawn of Christianity.
I've never read any of Michael Scott's books, but I love his taste in YA literature. A lot can be determined by a man's influences, and now I am really interested in reading The Necromancer.
Wow! This book sounds really awesome!
