Simone Elkeles, Gillian Philip, Kalayna Price & Suzanne Young Shout Out (EED)

Today is Shout-Out Day. This means I will be giving a shout out to the Authors who have participated in the Birthday Phenomenon. They have all gone above and beyond to make this event happen. So what better way to thank them, then stopping by their sites!

Suzanne Young is a brilliant scientist. Not really. But she is a former middle school teacher turned zookeeper (mother). When Suzanne’s not fending off zombie squirrels or narrating her daughter’s Barbie soap operas, she can be found camping on the Oregon coast or writing obsessively. Suzanne is the author of The Naughty List series coming February 4th, 2010 from Razorbill/Penguin. The Naughty List is about a group of cheerleaders who investigate cheating boyfriends. Which Suzanne never did. Or at least, not that you can prove.

Kalayna Price
Kalayna Price has always been an avid reader and dreamer. At ten she raided her father's fantasy fiction bookcase and her already active imagination went into hyperdrive. Her first love was for the epic adventures and mythical races and creatures of high fantasy, but she has always been drawn to things that go bump in the night. It is that darker side of fantasy where she currently devotes her words.

Kalayna is the author of two Dark/Urban Fantasy series. The Haven Novels, consisting of ONCE BITTEN (January 2009), TWICE DEAD (February 2010), and THIRD BLOOD (2011), follow the story of Kita Nekai, a kitten shapeshifter on the run from her clan and responsibilities, who is turned into a vampire and entangled in the supernatural underworld. Kalayna also has a new series, which will be released by ROC and will be hitting shelves in October 2010. GRAVE WITCH, the first Alex Craft Novel, is about series title character, Alex Craft. Alex is a broke magic-eye for hire, but a case with a sexy reaper, a dark cop, and a ghost-silencing killer has more than her rent on the line—it may cost her soul.

Kalayna draws her ideas from the world around her, her studies into ancient mythologies, and her readings of classic folklore. Her stories contain not only the mystical elements of fantasy, but also a dash of romance, a bit of gritty horror, some humor, and a large serving of mystery.

When not writing, she can be found reading for both pleasure and research, locked in her studio with a paintbrush, out in nature with her camera, or just about anywhere with a hula-hoop. Yeah, you read that correctly. Kalayna thinks hoop dance is about the most entertaining form of exercise on the planet, and has been known to hoop with fire.

I live in the north-east highlands of Scotland, with one husband, two children, one labrador (Cluny), two psychotic cats (the Ghost and the Darkness) - and not as many rabbits as there used to be.

Writing for a living is a lot of fun - like taking dictation from the characters in my head, who spend their lives telling me what's going to happen next.
But I like it that I never know just how it's all going to end - not till the fat lady sings, the villain meets a suitably sticky end, and the boy gets the girl (or indeed the boy).

(taken from her site)Simone ElkelesSimone Elkeles was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. Her funny way of looking at life and the world around her has an effect on the people she hangs out with. If you hear people laughing, you’ll probably find Simone not far away. Simone has four teen books in bookstores:
Perfect Chemistry
How to Ruin a Summer Vacation.
How to Ruin my Teenage Life
Leaving Paradise
Simone has also been voted the Illinois Author of the Year by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English.
Simone went to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and received her Bachelor’s of Science there in Psychology in 1992. She continued her education at Loyola University-Chicago where she received her Master’s of Science degree in Industrial Relations while working for a manufacturing company creating diversity programs for their employees.
She loves animals (she has two dogs – a labradoodle and a German Shepherd), kids (she also has two of those) and her family. In her spare time she’s the Hockey Mom for her kids hockey teams and is an active Girl Scout leader specially trained in outdoor education. She also spends time mentoring other teen and adult authors. (she also loves sushi, which you can probably tell by reading her books).
Simone writes about teens because she was a teen in the 80’s (when spiked hair and blue eye shadow were “rad”) and she loves writing about those exciting teen relationships and romances.

The graphics on the homepage of Gillian's site grabbed me right away! They left an impact, and definitely mirrored the tone of her books.

I have been a fan of Simone Elkeles and her pretty site since I first read Perfect Chemistry (it was my very first 'book perk' from working in the industry XD) I am a HUGE fan of her book trailers and love that the site features them so prominently.

Suzanne's blog is very streamlined and easy to navigate. The color scheme is very pretty.

Kalayna's site matches the tone of her book covers very well. The "Fun Stuff" section is very cool

Suzanne Young - I liked the countdown for her next book and the list of her other books on the sidebar. I liked her banner and I love blogs in general so I had fun moseying around and reading her comments. I want to plan a family paint night now!

Kalayna Price - I liked the banner colors matching her latest release. The fiery hoop dance video was amazing and I liked the photo slide of the artwork.

Gillian Philip - I liked the anime(ish) wallpaper and the book page listing each book with the synopsis on the side The Mogs & the Mutts photo gallery is so cute!

Simone Elkeles - Pop-up Video! I loved "Perfect Chemistry" and I enjoyed the rap video, very SNL. Bonus, I didn't know this was a series; I need to read "Rules of Attraction" and there is a third one being released in 2011. Squee!

1. Gillian Philip's website was so cool! I loved the Manga-esque figure on the home page, and the city behind it.

2. I've actually visited Simone Elkeles's website before, and I love that her website looks like a virtual teen girl's room.

3. Suzanne Young's blog header was hysterical. I think that it said 'Resident Slacker Workaholic'. Love it!

4. I thought that Kalayna Price's website graphics were similar to that of Gillian Philip's website. It worked just as well, though.

That's four extra entries, please (is it alright to have four?) Thanks!

I love Suzanne's header - author, resident, slacker, workaholic. :)

Kalayna's answer to the name question in her FAQ section is great - a Russian berry that has to freeze before it's sweet enough to eat. Lovely.

The animation in Simone's site is awesome.

Gillian's site design! Oh my gosh! Plus this line: "taking dictation from people who don't exist". It's awesome.
