Bree Despain Interview and Giveaway

Today we welcome Bree Despain!

Bio from Bree's Site

Bree rediscovered her childhood love for creating stories when she took a semester off college to write and direct plays for at-risk, inner-city teens from Philadelphia and New York. She currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband, two young sons, and her beloved TiVo. The Dark Divine is Bree's debut novel.

What do you think of the cover of the book?
I love the cover of my book!  My jaw dropped when I saw it.  Actually, the first thing I did when I opened the jpeg file my editor sent me, was to try to scroll up to find the rest of the girl’s body.  It took me a few seconds to realize that the picture was supposed to just be of her legs.  Once that idea sunk in, I was totally enamored with the cover.  My favorite part is the purple nail polish on the girl’s toes.  Which was the inspiration for THE DARK DIVINE nail polish!

Do you feel that Jude will ever come to deal with what life has dealt him?

Ah, wouldn’t we all like to know.  Actually, Jude is the reason I am writing the sequel to TDD called THE LOST SAINT.  I wanted a chance to explore what happens to him—along with Grace and Daniel and few new characters—but I can’t tell you if he comes to terms with his problems . . . you’ll just have to read the sequel. ;)

I have given a few interviews and the author said they had rewritten the ending a few times. Did you rewrite the ending to get it just right?
Yes and no.  The very first draft of TDD was very different from the final version, and had a very different ending.  One I think would have made many readers quite sad.  However, after letting that original draft sit for a long time, I rewrote about 2/3rds of the book, added about 100 pages of content, and changed the ending.  A lot of new ideas popped up as I rewrote the final pages of TDD—ones I hadn’t envisioned when I first started writing it—and I couldn’t be happier with how it ended up ending.  Other than a few minor tweaks to clarify a few things, the ending has stayed the way I wrote it during that major rewrite of the book.

Did you ever want to be anything besides an author?
Yes.  I always loved writing, but as a kid I never thought that I was really capable of being a real author.  I seriously thought that authors were some sort of special breed of people and I was far too ordinary to be one of them.

Growing up, I went through several different fantasy career options including artist, archeologist, actress, and attorney.  (I guess I have a thing for careers that start with the letter ‘A.’)  I was studying to go to law school when I took a semester off from college to write and direct plays for at-risk teens.  This when I realized that writing was what really made me happy, and I decided to go after the dream of being an author.

Now for a random, Coke or Pepsi?
I actually don’t drink a lot of soda.  I probably only have a couple a year.  But if I do indulge, I actually go for a good root beer like IBC or a blood orange soda from World Market. (Oh dang it, now I’m craving a soda!)

Don't enter me because I'm not in the US, but what a great interview! I loved the questions! :-) I know what sshe means about thinking that authors are a different breed of people. I still think that. Go her for getting past that and writing what seems to be such an awesome book that I SO want to read!

Hello there!

Very cool interview. It is always interesting to read all these behind the scene stuffs before the final draft made it to publication. It is interesting to know that the sequel will be published soon and this is seriously a cue which says that I need to read the first book, as soon as possible! So please include me for this giveaway.

What I loved about Bree's site?
My first impression on the design was "Wow, that's cool!". The brick background, the graffiti font - all these are different from the other author's site I've ever stumble to. And another thing that I found unique was her selection of songs for TDD. I just listened to them and I'm seriously in love. The fact that she actually described all these songs and how they relate to the book is just amazing! As a music and book junkie, I think listening to these songs while reading the book would be a fantastic experience for me =)

Extra entry:
I've also commented on your TDD's review!

Yes, I think I've babbled enough *lol*. I do have problem when it comes to commenting in which I tend to go a lil bit overboard (Maybe more than just a lil bit :P). So sorry about that.

Thank you again for this giveaway!

I loved reading the 'sneak peak' on Bree's site.
A short excerpt is a great way to check out an author's writing style. I enjoyed Bree's.

I also commented on the review.

Thanks for deciding to make this international.

Thanks for going international!
I love her site, it's so modern, and since she writes about teens I think her site is also made thinking about them. That's my opinion, anyway :)
